Reasons you can derive inspiration from Kyoto
Inspired by Kyoto
The culture and industries of Kyoto, which have been nurtured throughout history, have always been updated in search of something new and better.
Kyoto is home to many innovative companies, for example, a company that has developed its business from the hanafuda card game to video games and is now creating products loved all over the world, and a company that has applied Kyoto’s traditional industrial techniques to the global textile industry and is providing innovative products.
As such a fertile soil, Kyoto is said to have inspired many innovators outside Japan.
Steve Jobs
Apple founder Steve Jobs was devoted to Zen since his student days and frequently visited Kyoto during his lifetime.
Andy Warhol
Artist Andy Warhol left behind many sketches he made during his visit to Kyoto. For example, a study argues that Warhol’s concept of “repetition” of the same motif was probably inspired by the 1,001 standing Thousand-armed Kannon statues at Sanjusangen-do Temple, Kyoto.
John Hanke
The creator of Google Maps and Pokémon Go is said to have been inspired by his Zen experience in Kyoto to develop the AR game Ingress.
Ivan Zhao
The Notion co-founder said in an interview that during his one-month stay in Kyoto, he gained a lot of inspiration to create Notion, being impressed especially by architecture and artisanship in the city.
